Description

Artists make collages for many reasons—as compositional experimentation for future work like a painting, as a meditative process, and as a distinct art form. In this workshop participants use Grace Hartigan’s extraordinary work as inspiration to create collages that bridge the worlds of abstract expressionism and representational drawing and painting.

Using design strategies that incorporate formal principles like proportion, repetition, and emphasis, we create self-expressive and graphically resolved work. As we paint our own collage papers, sift through magazine ephemera, and cut and glue, we discuss the Ninth Street Women, Dadaism, Absurdism, and the work of contemporary collage artists who have used this form to disrupt the status quo.

Participants can expect to leave the workshop with a few small studies and a finished 9 × 12 inch work. We’ll have collage materials, but attendees can bring their own supplies too.
