Online Course: Art and Literacy

How can art be used to develop student growth in literacy skills? This self-paced online course explores methods for integrating art and literacy strategies to support North Carolinaโs Literacy Instruction Standards across classrooms.
Participants gain an understanding of how literacy is defined through a variety of lenses. Strategies that incorporate the use of NCMA works of art are used to practice and apply activities to build interpretive and expressive modes of literacy focused on a variety of reading materials, comprehension, vocabulary building, and writing.
Educators will
- be able to define literacy through a variety of disciplinary lenses.
- be able to recognize opportunities and practice strategies for integrating art and literacy instruction that support Literacy Instruction Standards.
- design a lesson or set of lessons that support literacy through arts integration based on the needs of your classroom.
- reflect within a collaborative peer learning community and create curricular connections with the NCMAโs collection.
This course is designed for teachers of all disciplines and audiences. A certificate of participation for 20 hours will be provided (2 CEUs, with prior approval from the local school system).
