Description

Please note: this event is happening at YMI Cultural Center, Stephens Room, 39 S. Market St., Asheville, NC 28801

Please note: This workshop includes a nude live model. Participants must be 18+ to attend.

In this five-hour workshop with Asheville-based artist Joseph Pearson, hosted by YMI Cultural Center, participants are introduced to and practice the five basic steps in making a drawing: gesture, proportion, block-in, refinement, and detail. The workshop employs photo references and a live model.

There is a 30-minute break for lunch. Participants can bring their own lunch or purchase food at nearby locations in downtown Asheville.

This workshop is offered twice. Participants choose to register for the Saturday or Sunday session.

About the instructor
Joseph Pearson’s lifetime of creativity began in Mississippi and expanded to New York, Louisiana, and now North Carolina. He studied at the Art Students League of New York with Hughie Lee-Smith and earned a master of education degree from William Carey University. Pearson has participated in numerous museum shows and regional, national, and international competitions. Some of his awards include a Ucross Foundation residency, Vermont Studio Center residency, two Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, and an Artists’ Fellowship Inc. grant.

In North Carolina Pearson has taught figure drawing workshops at the Asheville Museum of Art and the John C. Campbell Folk School. He has painted murals for Benne on Eagle in downtown Asheville, the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, and Cathedral of All Souls in Biltmore Village. His latest mural is a six-banner project in downtown Asheville representing the formerly Black community of Southside. He has been a resident artist at Pink Dog Creative in Asheville since 2015.
