Join us for an in-person artist talk and live VR (virtual reality) painting demonstration with local VR artist Rhett Hissam and LEVR Studios founder Mike Cuales. The demonstration features ambient audio from Raleigh musician Ancestral Memories.

How will immersive technologies and art converge? This event aims to highlight immersive technologies, the emerging media of VR, and its current applications. Hissam weaves together the overall theme of light, how it applies to new technology, and her personal inspiration during a multipart performance. Prior to the demonstration, Hissam and Cuales discuss the powers versus pitfalls of new media as it applies to authentic expression in a digital space.

About the presenters

Rhett Hissam is an artist and multimedia designer. She works as an immersive media producer in NC State’s Department of Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA). She is continuously developing her artistic style through new mediums, most recently creating artwork in VR. Hissam says, “Virtual reality provides a medium capable of combining all of my previous experience in one platform, which is why I think it is such a powerful tool.”

Mike Cuales is a creative director and immersive media producer with deep experience in educational media and innovative technologies. In 2015 he launched LEVR Studios, which has produced 360 VR documentary films, first-of-its-kind science-based VR exhibits, interactive art education experiences, projection-based installations, and public art displays. Mike has worked for over 18 years as a creative director at NC State’s DELTA.
