Join us for the 10th Weinberg Lecture of Egyptology, a double program that commemorates two important milestones in Egyptology: the 200th anniversary of the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs and the centennial of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

In the first 40-minute talk, Dr. Jackie Jay, Eastern Kentucky University, traces the path of decipherment of hieroglyphs from Kircher to Champollion and places the Rosetta Stone in its original historical context as a priestly decree issued in the reign of Ptolemy V.

In the second, Emily Smith-Sangster, Princeton University, reflects on the early discovery and analyses of the tomb and body of Tutankhamun and explores the theory of a manufactured “iconography of disability” created by artists of the king and meant to depict his true-to-life experiences.
