The Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and the North Carolina Museum of Art require film and lecture program participants ages 13 and up to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 NAAT or PCR test result; test results must be within 72 hours of the event. Please plan to have one of these items in hand upon entry for Museum personnel.
Participants learn the basics of linoleum cut—also known as linocut—printmaking in two sessions over one weekend. We start by developing images through sketches that maximize the bold graphic qualities of the medium. We then transfer designs directly to the linoleum block and carve. The second session is dedicated to inking and printing blocks. If time allows participants can design, carve, and print more than one block. We also make a group print from all the blocks made during the workshop. This is a magical experience where you’ll see your design come to life through printed ink on paper!
About the artist
Bill Fick is a printmaker living in Durham. For the past 30 years, he has been making super-graphic narrative prints that deal with a variety of satirical and sociopolitical themes. he’s especially interested in making work that bridges the gap between fine art and lowbrow art.
Fick is a lecturing fellow in the Department of Art, Art History, and Visual Studies at Duke University, where he teaches drawing, printmaking, comics, and zines. He is also the assistant director for visual and studio art at Duke’s Rubenstein Arts Center. His work has been exhibited globally and can be found in the collections of the Fogg Museum, New York Public Library, and Zimmerli Art Museum. Fick is co-author with Beth Grabowski of Printmaking: A Complete Guide to Materials & Processes.
