Chapel Hill artist Angela Eastman demonstrates techniques and principles of basket weaving using kudzu. Through learning about basketmaking with this invasive species, the class examines history, cultural traditions, and ecological impact.
This workshop begins with a presentation on basketry as a historical and contemporary connector to place, followed by a demonstration of kudzu preparation and basket weaving. At the end participants have a chance to weave their own small form from prepared kudzu vines.
About the instructor
Angela Eastman holds an MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BA in studio art from Colorado College. She has completed the two-year Core Fellowship Program at Penland School of Craft. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is in the collections of Duke University, Colorado College, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
