Jazz at the NCMA is excited to present the second concert in our new series, Jonathan Butler with Special Guest Avery Sunshine.

About Jonathan Butler
Jonathan Butler is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who leads a life few can imagine. Born in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid and raised in poverty, Butler was the first Black artist to be played on white South African radio and to appear on national television. Though his musical abilities would take him away from the world he grew up in, he would neither forget the plight of his fellow South Africans nor the man that led them to freedom. It is for this reason the late Nelson Mandela credited Butler’s music as having inspired him during his imprisonment.

Butler’s first single won the South African equivalent to a Grammy. His commitment to his craft came to fruition with his self-titled debut album, which received a Grammy nomination for the pop hit “Lies.” The instrumental “Going Home” earned him another Grammy nomination, and the mid-tempo ballad “Sarah, Sarah” confirmed Butler’s place in popular music.

About Avery Sunshine
Avery Sunshine takes no detours in creating melodious music for the masses. She makes the kind of music that undeniably satisfies the soul. Her sound is uplifting, vibrant, and exactly as her namesake suggests, full of sunshine. She brings people together through her riveting stage performances, candid and often humorous stage banter, and optimistic anthems about love and life.

Most known for the #1 Billboard chart hit single “Call My Name” from her critically heralded sophomore project The Sunroom, Avery and her creative life partner, Dana “BigDane” Johnson, were awarded ASCAP’s Rhythm and Soul Song of the Year Award.
