Join us for an encore presentation of a dance the NCMA commissioned in 2021 from the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) dance program. The original choreography, exploring rituals of lament, release, and hope, is an extension of The Beautiful Project’s installation Memory Is Ritual: A Remembrance of Ourselves, part of the exhibition NC Artist Connections.

Jaki Shelton Green, North Carolina poet laureate and NCMA’s newly appointed master poet in residence, leads an informal discussion after the performance with the chair of NCCU’s dance department, Dr. Kristi Vincent Johnson, and The Beautiful Project’s creative director, Khayla Deans. The discussion is only for people who identify as female and centers on themes of lament, release, and hope for Black women and women of diverse backgrounds.

This commissioned work is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
