Join us for the North Carolina premiere of Overland, a stunning, stirring, and cinematic journey about three falconers shot across four continents. The celebration continues with a day of related programming in the Museum Park and SECU Auditorium on Saturday, October 2.
Overland (2020). Directed by Revere La Noue, Elisabeth Haviland James, 105 min.
How can we connect to our natural, primal spirit when modern society threatens to erase it?
The film Overland twists and turns like nature itself, bridging ancient to modern, east to west, and earth to sky. It follows the stories of three falconers, “Jedi Knights of Nature,” each facing a unique set of challenges as they pursue their passion for the ancient art of partnering with birds of prey.
Lauren, a daredevil anthropologist from Oklahoma, trains injured eagles to fly and hunt while scouring the world for age-old falconry secrets. Giovanni has fled a troubled childhood in Rome for a solitary life in the Italian countryside with his wolves, hawks, and horse. In Dubai Khalifa is training to be the world’s best falcon racer. As each of these stories unfolds, eagles, hawks, and falcons play a critical role in helping their human partners keep the wild from fading out of sight and out of mind.
“The human subjects in the film are interesting, more than you think they’ll be, but the real stars are the eagles, falcons, and hawks portrayed. Nature documentaries tend to focus on reconnecting a city-dwelling, tech-addicted populace with the natural world, with varying degrees of success, but Overland triumphs wildly in surprising and incredible ways. Creatures that hunt airborne are the pinnacle expression of the food chain in our world. The purity of the relationship between predator and prey, along with the merciless rigor of flight, brings into sharp focus the true nature and mechanics of life on earth. The compelling story of raptors and their companion humans presented in breathtaking footage is one of the most unexpectedly thrilling and satisfying cinematic adventures you’ll have.” (Film Threat)
