The third concert in our 2023 series features five-time Grammy-winning jazz pianist Robert Glasper, who this year won Best R&B Album. He is joined by “the rich and velvety yet precociously refined” stylings of 23-year-old jazz sensation Samara Joy, winner of the latest Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album.

About Robert Glasper
Robert Glasper is a jazz pianist with a knack for mellow, harmonically complex compositions that also reveal a subtle hip-hop influence. The pianist released his debut album, Mood, in 2004. In 2012 the Robert Glasper Experiment (with a slew of guest vocalists) issued Black Radio, which sought to blur the boundaries between jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and rock and roll. Glasper played on Kendrick Lamar’s celebrated To Pimp a Butterfly and Maxwell’s BLACKsummers’night. For Don Cheadle’s 2016 Miles Davis biopic, the pianist curated the soundtrack and wrote original music.

About Samara Joy
With her Verve Records debut, Linger Awhile, Samara Joy makes her case to join the likes of Sarah, Ella, and Billie as the next mononymous jazz singing sensation recorded by the venerable label. Her voice has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King, appearances on the Today Show, and millions of likes on TikTok—cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star.

Please keep an eye out for our Know before You Go email, which will be sent a few weeks before the concert. Also feel free to reach out to Moses.T.AlexanderGreene@ncdcr.gov should you have any questions.

Please note: tickets are only available for lawn seating (general admission) for this concert.
