In celebration of North Carolina native and jazz icon Nina Simone’s birthday, join us for an evening of scholarship and song. National Humanities Center Fellow Dr. W. Jason Miller lectures on poet Langston Hughes’s impact on establishing Simone’s reputation and forever shaping her image as the High Priestess of Soul. A discussion moderated by NC Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green and a performance of Simone’s classics by vocalist Sandra Dubose, accompanied by former NCMA composer in residence Carolyn Colquitt and Dez Callis, follow the lecture.
